The Rwamatamu coffee farm is situated on rich volcanic soil at 1600 to 2000 metres above sea level, in a region with tropical temperatures and regular rainfall. All of these combine to produce Arabica coffee beans with an exceptional flavour, with an enviable cupping score of 88!
The Rwamatamu origin story
Rwamatamu was founded by husband and wife Rutaganda Gaston and Mukantwaza Laetitia in 2015, looking for a way to support their family.
Growing up, Gaston and Laetitia's children have been very involved in the running of the estate, and their daughter, Bernice, took on marketing, translating negotiations, and creating educational materials. Bernice will be taking over the operation of the estate when her parents retire.
Bernice and her husband, Luke, plan to follow in the footsteps of Gaston and Laeticia to build on the strong foundations of Rwamatamu by expanding on its core values of community, integrity, and sustainability.
Social Impact
The Rwamatamu farm is family-run and strives to bring a positive social and economic impact to Rwanda. This is achieved by their commitment to regular purchases of coffee beans for local cooperatives and small holders. They also invest heavily in the growth of their employees, 80% of whom are women. They even have their own 'women-produced' lots, as the quote 'women are the backbone of our society'
A truly exceptional coffee
The Rwamatamu beans are Red Bourbon Arabica, processed naturally, with flavour notes of fruity, clean, juicy, and creamy. It has a berry-like sharpness. a creamy mouthfeel, and good depth. Notes of sweet cocoa powder linger on a clean, rich finish.
How to brew
The recommended brewing methods for Rwamatamu coffee are V60, cold brew, Aeropress, French press, and espresso (with or without milk), though we do recommend a V60 for a fuller, richer flavour.
