Beautiful African Ceramics

crafting connections in the heart of South Africa

At Cuppers Journey, our passion for African coffee has always been rooted in origin, story, and experience. As we continue to share these coffees, we want African ceramics that truly complement them; pieces that reflect the same sense of place, craftsmanship, and connection found in every cup.

This search leads us to Kleinmond, a small coastal town in the Western Cape, where we visit the South African ceramics gallery and workshop of Corinne De Haas.

What began in 1991 with a single kiln and potter’s wheel has grown into a family-run workshop led by Corinne and her son Alexander. Built on years of dedication and self-taught skill, the space reflects patience and passion, values we recognise closely from the world of coffee.

Alexander welcomes us into the workshop and shows us each stage of the process behind the handmade cups that are now part of our offering. Jan is at the potters’ wheel throwing pots, Judith is hand pressing some cups destined for our African coffee, while Emily is attaching handles with care and precision. Emily has been part of the pottery family for many years, firstly as nanny to Alexander and now in the workshop. It is delightful to see the sense of community, family and connection in everything they do.

The process itself is meticulous. Each piece is left to dry naturally before the first firing, strengthening the clay while keeping it porous enough to absorb glaze. The cups are then hand-dipped, with oxide blends creating the natural, earthy tones we are drawn to. A final firing at high temperatures completes the transformation, ensuring durability while preserving the character of each piece.

When we speak to Corinne about her designs, she shares something that resonates— people form a personal connection with their favourite cup. It becomes part of a daily ritual – the feel, the weight, the way it enhances the moment.

This is exactly why we are offering these South African ceramics alongside our African Speciality Coffees.

Just as our coffees reflect their African origins, these handmade pieces bring that story full circle. They are crafted with care, rooted in South Africa, and designed to elevate the experience of every cup.

For us, it’s not just about what you drink; it’s about how you enjoy it.
